The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for others, especially for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater also.
The obvious and straightforward fact that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a type of profound affection concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump develop during the previous year.
